this orange peel will dry out, turn brown and shrink. with the passing of time the orange peel will fully disintegrate and the silk thread will no longer “hold” the peel – and yet the looped threads will bear witness to a lost circumference.

this orange sits on my balcony while i document its gradual decay. fruit fly heaven. (day 4)

i have sat in the exact same spot to eat my orange these last three days. one of my peels is still in its original place, the other has disappeared.

i had an image from a dream i wanted to perform: i am sitting on a park bench with a paper bag full of oranges. one by one i peel and eat all the oranges in the bag. as i peel the oranges i neatly place the peels in a small pile on the bench to the left of me. when i find a seed i place the seed in its own pile to the right of me. when i am finished i have a pile of peels on one side and a pile of seeds on the other. i scrunch up the paper bag and place it on my lap.

so… i bought some florida oranges, put them in a paper bag, went to the park, found a bench and started the “performance.” the oranges however, were not juicy, they were tough and dry, so i ended up eating only one, and instead of scrunching the paper bag i scrunched the orange peel and put it in the branches of the tree next to me.

upon returning home i looked more closely at the label on the oranges: not only had a fungicide been used (pretty standard) but the oranges were “coated with food-grade shellac based wax, or resin to maintain freshness.”

i don’t recommend phoenix brand florida oranges. i think i will stick to valencia or navel.

today walking through ndg alleyways after the downpour, like walking through a different place, a different time. didn’t eat my orange till i got to the park, and then didn’t place my peel till i was almost back home. ended up seeing this orange post in the parking lot behind pharmaprix. voila.
